آيَةُ الْمُنَافِقِ ثَلَاتُ: إِذَا حَدَّتَ كَذَبَ وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ، وَإِذَا أُوتُمِنَ خَانَ

Translation: There are three signs of a hypocrite: when he talks, tells lies, whe he promises, he breaks it, when he is given trust, he does dishonesty in it..

According to hadees, there are three symptoms of a hypocrite.

  • When he talks, he tells lies.

  • When he promises, he breaks it.

  • When he is entrusted (with something), he does dishonesty.

A person asked the Holy Prophet which is the act to take a person to paradise; then Holy Prophet said, "to speak truth, when a person speaks truth, then this is an act of piety. There is increase in his faith and this increase in faith becomes source of entering in paradise":

That person asked what is the act taking a person to hell? He said, when a person tells lies then he will do sins and when he will do sins, then he will do disbelief and this will take him to hellfire. Telling lies in not concerned only with tongue but many other disliked acts also come in category of lies.

For instance, to confiscate someone's belonging or wealth through wrong means, to weigh less than actual weight, to have hypocrisy etc. The Holy Prophet regarded showing off as a type of telling lies.
